Paul Meli, you have chosen to make Glen Cove your hometown. Why and how would you enhance it?

I did, in fact, choose to make Glen Cove my home, albeit some 35 years ago. Having been raised in the bustling and somewhat impersonal atmosphere of South Ozone Park, Queens, I was struck by the fact that Glen Cove, although as racially, ethnically and economically diverse as my childhood neighborhood, had a close, hometown [...]

Paul Meli, in your opinion what is the biggest issue facing Glen Cove and how would you address it?

It should come as no surprise that the biggest issue facing Glen Cove, in my opinion, involves the City’s taxes and finances, especially when there is, on the very night that I am writing this response, a public hearing scheduled to consider a proposed 2010 budget that would increase our tax levy by some 6.6%, [...]

Paul Meli, you are asking the voters to hire you as their mayor. What makes you the best candidate for the job?

My name or face should be a familiar to those who attend or otherwise follow Glen Cove City Council meetings, as I have attended most such meetings in the last five years, often questioning actions taken by the council, as well as the lack of openness in our city’s government. I am as knowledgeable about [...]

Goals & Vision for Glen Cove

Paul Meli’s goals include strictly controlling the City’s spending to avoid what has become the annual compounding of Glen Cove’s multi-million dollar deficit. He believes formulating the budget with the input and participation of the community will bring a realistic plan to combat the yearly budget shortfalls. He strongly feels that we cannot continue to tell people only what they want to hear, or worse, what we want them to hear, especially when it comes to the city’s finances. “We will only be in a position to solve Glen Cove’s fiscal problems when we identify and acknowledge them.”
In Meli’s opinion, we cannot continue to spend millions of more dollars than we take in and then simply deal with the annual shortfall by raising taxes and increasing our borrowing. We cannot create jobs and layers of government, hire consultants, pass legislation or undertake projects without thought or regard to the resulting cost, or to the availability or source of funding, especially in these trying economic times.
